Stainless Steel Firewall Penetration Seal Kits
|
With construction of our all stainless steel hot air diverter valve underway, we began a series of burn tests on the vent valve. We were astounded by the effect of the flames on aluminum or other materials attached to the engine side of the firewall.
Immediately the revelation hit. "There has been no real satisfactory method of creating a fire barrier for wire and cable to pass through the firewall."
During a conversation with Bob Nuckolls of Aero Electric Connection, we discussed the need for this type of device for certified aircraft as well as experimental homebuilt aircraft.
Our experience in the development of the vent valve had taught us that thin wall stainless steel tubing is NOT available, however the particular technology used in the vent would be a natural for the firewall fitting program.
One element of the firewall penetration challenge was creating a system that would allow easy replacement during annual inspections involving wires and cables with fire block capabilities. Months of testing new materials in the oven at 2,000 degrees, and flame tests on a mock firewall followed.
When we were satisfied with the materials and design, we built permanent stamping dies to manufacture the hardware to exacting quality standards. EPM-Av Corp. now offers firewall penetration fittings to the homebuilder.
The stainless steel fitting retains integrity in excess of 2,000 degrees, and is attached to the firewall. Firesleeve tube is then clamped to the fitting with wires through both elements. Another piece of firesleeve is inserted between the wires and firesleeve/fitting, sealing any open space. A second clamp is used to seal the firesleeve end away from the fitting. Silicone fireblock is used to seal between the fitting and firewall, and the end away from the fitting. This prevents raw gas, flames, moisture, etc. from entering the cabin, and also prevents flames from entering the cabin for an extended period of time, ie. several minutes. Eventually the firewall is heated to the point that combustibles behind the firewall burst into flame.
Our goal is to offer several extra minutes of protection in the unfortunate event of an engine fire. The fire protection time period is ultimately determined by the quality of the seal formed by the homebuilder. We have spent many hours designing and testing materials and procedures to make the assembly process straight forward and as fool proof as possible.
